Fraud Targets Haitian Americans

The word on the emerging scam comes to Texas from of the Haitian Embassy in Washington and the Greater Washington Haiti Relief Committee. Lauri Saathoff is a spokesperson in the Texas AG's office.

"The scheme appears to offer Haitian Americans the documents they need to bypass the official government process for brining their family members from Haiti to the United States."

Saathoff says Haitian Americans are contacted initially with fliers or by phone.

"And they're told to wire about $500.00 in exchange for the documents and a confirmation number that will allow them to fly to Haiti to extract five relatives."

But of course there is no short cut and the entire scheme is fraudulent.ξ Saathoff says anyone wanting to relocate relatives should contact U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

This quick fix or any other is just a scam to steal money from those concerned about their families.
