Houstonians Go Postal

As soon as you walked into the downtown Houston post office on Washington Street you couldn't miss it. There it was staring right at you— a big, long line. Normally people might take a look and head back to their cars, but not this time. If you wanted to mail your package first class and have it arrive by Christmas. It had to be in by today.

Rick Bennet was mailing a package to his nieces.

"This is going to El Paso."
Bill:"Oh that should get there no problem."
"Yeah I hope so, we'll see. Get it in there now and hopefully it gets there before Christmas."

Rachell Weidmeyer had a pretty good reason for waiting till five days before Christmas to mail her mother's gift.

"I just bought it yesterday (laugh). I just found out what my mom wanted. My mom is hard to shop for."

Dionne Montague is a spokesperson for the US Postal Service. She expects tens of thousands to stop by a Houston post office.

"Last Monday was the traditional busiest mailing day, but because Christmas is on a Friday, we have two busiest mailing days. It's almost an extra week."

Montague says anything dropped off Monday will definitely make it to its destination. After Monday, you'll have to send it overnight express to ensure it gets there. Some packages will be delivered on Christmas day, but only if they were sent overnight express and dropped off by Wednesday. Thursday is too late.
