Ready to Make the Roadways Usable

Snow is a welcome sight for many Houstonians but it can cause problems on the roadways. The Texas Departmentξof Transportation and Houston Public Works are prepared to combat the effects of snow and freezing rain on the
roadways. City dump trucks are loaded with a mixture that will be spread on the streets.

WrightAlvin Wright is a spokesman with Houston Public Works.

"We'll look at the calls that come in, either from residents, motorists, police, fire, ambulance. They'll give us an idea of some of the conditions that are going on out there, then we'll get the game plan from them at that point."

He says if conditions warrant response to the weather, dump trucks filled with crushed rock, or chat rock, and sand will be spread on the streets.

"We've got several thousand tons of chat rock prepared to place out in the streets. Each truck holds about ten to twelve cubic yards of chat rock, and we have six trucks that are on the standby ready to go."

Wright says TxDot will cover the freeways and Public Works will monitor bridges that go over city streets.

Its not really gonna be that much of an issue on the main streets. However, if there are conditions where they have to be hit also, we're prepared to do that."

He says the aggregate is used for traction for vehicles and to reduce the chance of the roadways icing up. He adds it does not give motorists the green light to speed.
