"People start in many different ways. Sometimes there's a little awkward giggle and sometimes, 'it's like mom, why don't you tell me where you grew up'."
Story Corps will be in Houston for five weeks. They kicked off the Houston Tour with a recorded conversation between Sheriff Adrian Garcia and his 85-year old mother. Garcia says he learned a few things he didn't know.
"For example, I knew that they always said that we knew we couldn't make it in Mexico City when ya'll were kids and that's why we decided to come here. I didn't know that it was based on the fact that we almost lost one of my brothers due to an illness."
Once the mic is on you can talk about anything you'd like.
"Some of my favorite conversations are just very in the present, two people sitting down talking about their relationship and what's going on in their lives right now and they just have it recorded."
And you never know what you might learn.
"The other thing too I found out is that I'm the accident." (laughter).
