The Houston early-music group, Mercury Baroque, welcomes the Canadian vocal ensemble, Les Voix Baroques, for a three-hundredth-fiftieth anniversary celebration of the birth of English composer, Henry Purcell.ξGeneration Purcell, their program of small-ensemble instrumental pieces and sacred vocal works by Purcell and his contemporaries, takes place Friday night atξ8:00PM in the Cullen Theater of downtown Houston's Wortham Center. The Center for Irish Studies and the Music Department at the University of Saint Thomas present David and Kieran Munnelly, The Munnelly Brothers,ξLive in Concert, tonight atξ7:30 at Cullen Hall on the UST campus in Houston's Montrose neighborhood.ξ Tickets will be available at the door. In conjunction with theξ40th anniversary of man's landing on the moon, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston has mounted an exhibition, The Moon: "Houston, Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle Has Landed", which chronicles the many ways the moon has influenced visual artists over the pastξ500 years.ξFilm-makers and composers have also taken their inspiration from earth's closest planetary neighbor and this month's Artful Thursday event is an illustrated talk, Moonstruck: Film, Opera and Art, which will be presented by Dr. Marcia Citron, Professor of Musicology at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.ξShe'll discuss Moonstruck, the 1987 romantic film comedy starring Cher and Nicolas Cage that incorporates themes and arias from Puccini's beloved opera, La Boh’åme, and whose story-line is triggered by its main characters' belief in the magical powers that the moon holds over the human heart.ξKUHF's Eric Ladau talks with Dr. Citron and with the MFAH's Helga Aurisch about the talk about the talk and the exhibition.
