Mexican authorities are dealing with the growing problem of drug cartels that peddle their illicit product with lawlessness and with no regard to human life. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration calls La Familia the newest andξmost violent cartel to penetrate this country. Tela Mange is with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
"They're a violent criminal organization that's based in the Mexican state of Michoacan. They have a major U.S. drug distribution operation that operated throughout Texas. They primarily deal in methamphetamine, but they also have dealt in cocaine."
Armed with search warrants, federal agents with the help of local authorities, raided locales in 38-cities. Mange says arrests were made in the Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth and the Houston areas.
"We arrested 81 people and seized more than 200 pounds of methamphetamine, about a gallon of liquid methamphetamine, more than 23 pounds of cocaine, numerous weapons, numerous vehicles, and more than 900 thousand dollars in cash."
Mange says the national operation would not be possible without the help of local authorities.
"We're thankful that law enforcement was able to move in and serve these arrest warrants and these search warrants without any injuries and without any incident."ξξξξξξξξξξξξ
Attorney General Eric Holder said the U.S. would attack the drug cartels at all levels, from the leadership to their supply chains that reach deep into this country.
