A Night Out Against Crime

While the rest of the nation held National Night Out on August 4th, in Texas it's been officially moved to today.

Regardless of the date, the message stays the same: neighbors coming together to heighten awareness about crime and drug prevention.ξ

It began 26 years ago with people sitting on their front porches but it's evolved in many areas into block parties and get-togethers with local law enforcement.ξ Some police agencies sponsor their own events.

"Our particular events for the Houston Independent School District are going to be located at 35-hundred Tampa."
ξ
That's HISD Police Lt. Guadalupe Jimenez.

"We are having music, free food, drinks, lot of prizes, safety information, several businesses that have joined with us and will be coming out, setting up a table and passing out information."

Lt. Jimenez says it's good for neighbors to know each other and it's important to form relationships with police.

"Because the people, the community are out there. There are extra eyes and ears and we can bond together and fight crime and be able to deter any other possible criminal activity that may be going on."

ξThe HISD Police event runs until 7 o'clock.
