If each journey begins with a single step, then each construction project begins with the first shovel full of dirt. 24-hours after the Housing Authority Board approved almost $2.8-million dollars for a new home complex the first dirt was turned for The Oaks II at 43rd and Sealy.
The authority's executive director, Harish Krisnarao says the 40 one bedroom homes will be in 20 duplex units.ξ They're for low income seniors and he says they are well designed.
"They're approximately 800 square feet.ξ We had done a similar development about four years ago that went through the storm extremely effectively and we did not have any damage to those units."
Krisnarao says it should take between 12 and 18 months to complete the project and get folks moved in.
"We'll have the preference for the families that were displaced during the storm and once that is done we do have a waiting list and the waiting list contains approximately 1400 names currently."
The homes will have central air, washer/dryer hookups and four will be accessible for people with disabilities.
