Labor Day Weekend Means No Refusal on the Roads

It's called a "No Refusal Weekend", where local police and sheriff's deputies use mobile blood-testing labs if suspected drunk drivers refuse to take breath tests. This is Houston Police Assistant Chief Vicki King

"The whole point of this is not to put a lot of people in jail. The whole point of this is to keep people safe and for them to think before they drink and make arrangements to get home safely. You don't have to be a teetotaler, you just have to make arrangements to get home safe without putting the rest of the public at risk."ξξ

Crashes involving impaired drivers in Houston make-up more than half of all accidents. Hope Rangel is the executive director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in southeast Texas.

"We really need to come together as a community and our slogan is "Take the Wheel Houston". Take the wheel and be safe and make sure that everything that we're doing, we're doing cognizant of theξfact that we need to get home safe to our families and other people want their families to get home safely too, so we need to be responsible about our actions and not drink and drive."ξ

Labor Day weekend is the traditional end of summer and authorities say they usually see a big spike inξdrunk driving arrests over the holiday.ξξξξξ
