Tracking Crime Online

If you want to find out how much the house down the street is selling for you can go to HAR-dot-com. If you want to know what time the local grocery store opens you can find that online as well. But until now, there was no real way to find out how many cars have been stolen in your neighborhood. at least not cars stolen in the last week or month.ξ Now you can find out all sorts of crime related statistics in Houston at mycity-dot-houstontx-dot-gov. This is Police Chief Harold Hurtt:

"If you know what's going on around you, you know what to look for. If you see a trend of burglaries or burglaries of motor vehicles or robberies are happening you know...should be a little more careful."

The site is said to be pretty user friendly. A click here or there and you can find out what crimes are occurring where, or specific phone numbers you can call if you know about a crime. Since the police records are already computerized, the data goes to a central computer each day and so the system will be updated every 24 hours.

"So if you want to know what happened yesterday on your street, you can put in the 100 block of your street — after 8am — and you'll find out what crimes occurred on your street."

Chief Hurtt says the department's goal is to simply make the public more aware of what is going on around them. Bill Stamps, KUHF- Houston Public Radio News.
