Julio Martinez is the harpist with the band that bills itself as "The World's Greatest Mariachi," the 112-year-old Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitl’n.ξAs part of its 2009 summer tour of Texas, sponsored by Fiesta Mart and Goya Foods, Mariachi Vargas performs tomorrow evening at 7:30PM in the Brown Theater of downtown Houston's Wortham Center.ξThe opening act on the concert is another of our guests, 19 year-old Odessa, Texas, native, Esteban Velasquez, who won the title, "Best Mariachi Vocalist in the United States," in a competition held two years ago by Mariachi Vargas.ξJoining us also in KUHF's Geary Performance Studio was Laura Mu’±oz of Mu’±oz Public Relations, the promoter of Mariachi Vargas's Texas tour. Composer and Pianist Randoph Partain chats with KUHF's Chris Johnson about his CD, Mysteries. It's a compilation of meditative works for solo piano that began life at the request of several congreagation members of Lord of Life Lutheran Church where Partain is Minister of Music.
