Identifying Abused and Abducted Children

The DPS Training Academy has created a new course that will teach law officers how to recognize abused or abducted children when they come into contact with them, either in traffic stops or visits to their homes.

Officials say officers will learn how to recognize physical and mental signs of abuse, along with investigative techniques that include asking the right questions that can help them determine if a crime is or has been occurring.

The academy worked with the Texas Attorney General's Office, the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to develop the class curriculum.

This class is the first of its kind anywhere in the United States, and it's open to all law enforcement agencies in the state. DPS officials say they expect to be sharing it with other agencies across the country.
