State Parks and Wildlife Commissioner Dies

Governor Rick Perry paid tribute to John Parker as a passionate advocate for Texas wildlife, woods, and waters.ξ More than anything else, Perry said Parker will be remembered for his work in getting more funding for state parks two years ago.

Parker was a retired homebuilder and a past director of the National Association of Homebuilders.ξ Outside the office he was a conservationist and active in several wildlife habitat conservation groups.

Parker pushed efforts to expand hunting opportunities for young people, and he was instrumental in getting a new freshwater fish hatchery in East Texas.
