Still Time to Get a Flu Shot

"A fairly new stronger recommendation by the CDC is that we are going to immunize all the way through the flu season."

That's Julie Lindenberg, a Doctor of Nursing Practices and Director of Health Services at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. She says there is still time for a flu shot to become effective before the peak of the season.

"I would say in the next month or so we will probably see the highest incidents of cases and then the serious illnesses come shortly after that."

The problem this year is that Tamiflu, the most affective drug used to treat flu is not doing well against one A-strain of flu.

"However, Tamiflu is still affective against the other A strain and the B strain."

And she says Tamiflu isn't the only weapon in a physician's arsenal.

"There're actually four medications we have now and the second class of drugs are still very affective and we're not seeing resistance in those classes."

However, Lindenberg says the best weapon against the onslaught of flu is a flu shot.
