Survey Says: "Texans Love Libraries"

The survey was conducted for the TLA by KRC research. The statewide telephone survey of registered voters found that 79% think libraries are very important to their communities and that nine in ten think the in tough economic times they are an important resource for families and for those seeking employment.

"They would even support increasing funding for public and school libraries; this is an impressive thing to have happen."

Jim Hundemer is the manager of school library services at HISD.

Hundemer says the lack of libraries in some schools has been a problem in Texas that he hopes the survey will help reverse.ξξ Almost all, 99% of those surveyed believe that school libraries are essential to education and 93% think schools should be required to have a library and a librarian.

"To see these finding, to see it from the public's point of view and be able to tell our legislators that key voters in our state, across all demographics support public libraries and school libraries gives me a lot of confidence as I go to Austin."

Librarians from across the state will be knocking on legislators doors next month making the case for strong support for libraries in Texas.
