UH Moment: "President Renu Khator and the Tier One Status"

"All in favor say 'aye', opposed 'no.' Motion carried.ξ The appointment of Dr. Renu Khator as chancellor of the University of Houston System and University of Houston President has been approved.'

And with those words, Welcome Wilson, chairman of the board of regents, ushered in the next era in the history of the University of Houston, one that included ambitious goals to raise the status of the university to Tier One.ξ

"It's going to take an entire community to build a great university,' said Khator who, since becoming president in January, has been ambassador and evangelist for UH.ξ Tier One means excellence — excellence to spur economic growth, sustain an educated work force and support innovative research.

"We're going to expand our footprint in the health area.ξ We're going to expand our arts. We have many programs that are ranked nationally,' she said.ξ ξξ

With top educational offerings such as the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, the Creative Writing Program and colleges such as the Graduate College of Social Work — excellence already is part of students' UH experience.ξ Coupled with the partnerships with business, community and industry, a Tier One status will strengthen the region.ξ

In Texas, only Rice University, Texas A&M and the University of Texas have achieved this prestigious designation, which equates to more than $100 million in research expenditures, faculty honors, student success and other factors.ξ

"We need to serve this metropolis.ξ We are a metropolitan university completely engaged in the community, so we have to serve the students and put them in the center,' Khator said.ξ

President Renu Khator is part of what's happening at the University of Houston.
