A Harris County Crack Down on DWI

Harris County leads the nation in drunken driving fatalities. Warren Diepraam heads the DA's Vehicular Crimes Unit. The two part week-end crack down is designed to get good solid evidence against those who drink and drive.

"We're doing one on Friday night which will be open to all law enforcement in Harris County. That will be conducted at the Houston Police Department, where we'll have nurses, prosecutors, judges, police officers all there ready to go when and if a drunk driver comes in and refuses to give a sample."

The mobile unit will be used on Saturday night to collect evidence even quicker.

Diepraam says if a driver refuses to be tested for drunk driving as is required by law. The testing units will offer the speedy issuance of warrants and the immediate collection of blood for testing. It also gets the patrol officers back on the streets faster.ξ

Even the not guilty benefit from this effort.

"It's also meant to find people who shouldn't be prosecuted. Every now and then a person is under a point-zero eight and we've dismissed a couple of cases specifically as a result of these blood testing programs."

The money to pay for the mobile unit comes from Asset Forfeiture funds.
