FEMA Extends Blue Roof Deadline

Operation Blue Roof is a joint effort between FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers.

It's a temporary fix for homes with roof damage. FEMA pays for the Corps to install a blue roof, or tarp, over the hole in the house.

The program was supposed to be over by now, but FEMA Spokeswoman Erika Lopez says they're extending it to October 23rd in Harris, Galveston and Jefferson counties.

"We understand the situation and we sympathize with the situation of these homeowners.ξξAnd possibly some of them are just now getting into the recovery efforts and recovering their own home and personal property and we understand their situations. And we just want to make ample time for available for everyone to participate in this program."

The tarps can be used on roofs that are less than 50 percent damaged.

There's no cost associated with the blue roof and signing up for one doesn't affect your FEMA application or status.

All you have to do is call 888-766-3258 to find a FEMA Right-of-Entry Collection Center and fill out a form that allows contractors to install the tarp.
