Mark Sloan is Harris County's chief of the Office of Emergency Management. He says when a gulf storm is possible the county starts reviewing its hurricane checklist and talking with other county agencies to make sure everyone is on the same page. Especially this coming weekend.
"With the holiday, we want our departments and our partners to make sure their personnel are on call or available as we may be dealing with this as early as Monday."
OEM also checks with Harris County communities to find out what they may need as they prepare for a possible hit.
Sloan says Harris County has also been talking to state officials about Gustav.
"We've been in conference calls the last few days and we will be talking regularly with our regional liaison officer.ξ I probably talk to her three to four times a day."
As each day passes more information about Gustav is fed into computers and the storm's track can be narrowed down. But even a few hours from landfall Gustav's direction could change, so that all along the gulf coast officials are preparing for a possible landfall.
