"Optoacoustics is actually discovered by Alexander Graham Bell, and it's the translation of light energy into sound energy."
Ed: "And what will this research lead to?"
"A combination of a re-agent, if you will, and and an instrument to be able to rapidly test fluid samples for the presence of organisms of interest, or things that terrorists may try to introduce into a water supply system, as an example."
Meador says Fairway will manufacture the devices for the Navy and other Department of Defense customers when research and development concludes.
"It'll mean further expansion of our facilities and further validation of our business model to find new and market disruptive technologies; further validation of the optoacoustic technology, which was invented by our VP of research and development, Alexander Oraevsky."
Fairway Medical Technologies has more than doubled its manufacturing and research capacity in the past 24 months. The private company has five federally-sponsored government grants — three based on cancer and a couple on nanotecnology.
