Old Air Terminal Open House

The Houston Aeronautical Heritage Society has spent years restoring the original terminal at Hobby Airport, and tomorrow they'll show off their progress in a Wings and Wheels Open House. CessnaThey'll also show their collection of Houston aviation memorabilia in the terminal museum, and their collection of vintage airplanes. One of the planes is a mint condition 1947 Cessna two-seater that'll be given away in a raffle. Society President Drew Coats says proceeds will help pay for the ongoing work of restoring the terminal.

"We did the first phase of restoration in 2003, and opened the museum in January of 2004. And when we're finished with phase 2 this year we'll have two major additions to the museum. One, we will have finished the restoration of the entire first floor, and we will also be restoring a historic hangar."

Coats says this old terminal building from a bygone age is an architectural treasure that must be restored and preserved.

"Then 1940 Air Terminal here at Houston's Hobby Airport is really probably the best example of art deco airport architecture left anywhere in the United States."

Tickets to the Wings and Wheels Open House cost ten dollars for adults and five dollars for kids 12 and under. The open house will run from 10am to 5pm tomorrow at the old 1940 terminal, off Telephone Road on the far west side of Hobby Airport.ξ
