Operation Backpack Aims High

The Reverend Jamie Clark with the YMCA says the idea began three years ago because of the great need in the 31 school districts the YMCA serves. He says it has been very successful so far.

"The first year we touched right around 14-thousand children. This past year 28-thousand children benefited. Over the course of three years a little over 55-thousand children have received school supplies."

This year the goal is to help 50-thousand students who otherwise might not have the school supplies they need.ξ All kinds of supplies are needed in addition to backpacks. Valeria, who goes to Queen of Peace, has some ideas.

"Um, pencils, folders, paper, glue, a sharpener and an eraser."

The Y's Alicia Alaniz says there are plenty of locations to drop off donations.

"There are well over a hundred. We have 38 YMCA's and we have sponsors and partnerships; there's 40 Archdiocese of Galveston Houston participating with us."

You can get a complete list of the drop-off locations at ymcahouston.org.
