HISD Free Summer Meals

This is the 10th year HISD has offered the popular free summer meals. Food Services Spokesperson Julie Spreckelmeyer says it's open to everyone 18 and under, whether they're in school or not.

"The great thing about it is that it offers free meals to any child between the ages of one and 18. All they have to do is show up at a school, participating school or campus in Houston, and they can get a breakfast or a lunch at no charge."

Spreckelmeyer says the kids can also bring their parents.

"Their parents can come in too, and they have to pay for their meals, a dollar 75 for breakfast and three dollars for lunch, but we welcome families to come in."

Spreckelmeyer says HISD offers the free meals because children who come to school hungry during the school year don't stop being hungry just because it's summer and school is out. The HISD program goes through July 2nd, after which the City of Houston will offer a similar program at many city parks around town.

"They have a mean that they offer at various sites throughout the city. Just like our program, it's free to all students, all children I should say, between the ages of one and 18."
