Save Energy, Save Taxes

Energy Star is a government based program that encourages businesses to develop more energy efficient appliances. The Environmental Protection Agency promotes these products, but spokeswoman Tressa Tillman says consumers need to be sure to properly dispose of and recycle old products.

"Electronic recycling has definitely grown in importance over the past few years and that's why EPA works with manufactures and retailers to offer consumers more opportunities to e-cycle their used electronics."

Appliances with the Energy Star logo use at least ten percent less energy and water.

"EPA and the Department of Energy regularly review those standards because products are always improving and technology is already advancing. So that's one of those things we are regularly do."

Some items included in the tax free weekend are programmable thermostats, refrigerators and ceiling fans. Clothes washers are included but not dryers. The back to school tax free weekend will be August 15 through 17th.
