Swim Safety for Memorial Weekend

A government report says nationally the number of children who drown is up.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 300 children under five died in pools and spas in 2005. That's the latest year statistics are avialable. That is 74 more deaths than the previous year.girl underwater holding her nose

YMCA Aquatics Specialist Kristine Meyerson says Houston participated in a national study to identify why some groups are not as likely to learn how to swim.

"The data seemed to reflect that in many cases African-American and Hispanic children were more at risk because they did not always have the same opportunities that other children had to learn to swim."

Death and injury also occur due to drains. A new law was signed earlier this year that bans the manufacture and sale of drain covers that do not meet anti-entrapment safety standards.
