The 2014 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee will be televised live on TV 8 and streamed live online at 2pm on Saturday, March 29, 2014 from the studios at the LeRoy & Lucile Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting.

The top 55 spellers from 1,040 schools in 42 counties, from East Texas to Austin, will compete to win the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the nation’s long-standing educational promotion since 1925.

Eager spellers advance from a challenging series of school, district, and regional spelling bees that have over 100,000 competing students from the elementary to 8th grade level. Houston Public Media is the first public broadcaster and the third largest local sponsor of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This is the sixth successful year of the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee.

The top two spellers of the Houston Public Media Spelling Bee win an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. to represent Houston at the Scripps National Spelling Bee during Bee Week, May 27 through 29, 2014. The grand prize of the 2014 national contest carries a prestigious victory along with over $40,000 in cash and other prizes.
