They are among a group of Texas Medical Center academic health professionals who are learning how to become teachers.
“People who go to medical school or become researchers in an academic health care setting spend so much of their education preparing to become a physician or a researcher,” said University of Houston professor Bernard Robin. “They end up having teaching responsibilities with med students, interns, residents, fellows, and no real background in teaching.”
Robin, of the UH College of Education, directs an innovative master’s program that emphasizes the health sciences.
“Our framework for the master’s program is that if you’re are going to be a educator in health care in the 21ast century, you have to know how to teach, you have to know how to design curriculum, you have to know how to conduct an evaluation and you need to be very comfortable and fluent in a wide range of instructional technologies,” he said.
Classes for the two-year program are a combination of online and traditional face-to-face instruction, with classrooms in the Medical Center. Assignments apply to their current teaching experience…and create physician educators.
“Even physicians need an edge when they go looking for jobs here in Houston or around the country,” Robin said.
