“Destroy the Confederacy” Rally In Houston Remains Peaceful

According to HPD, approximately 400 anti-statue and 60 pro-statue protesters participated in the rally.

A rally called “Destroy the Confederacy” was held at Sam Houston Park on Saturday by the groups Black Lives Matter Houston and Socialist Alternative Houston. The purpose of the rally was to protest the “Spirit of the Confederacy” statue.

A counter-protest was announced Friday by the group This is Texas Freedom Force, raising safety concerns in light of recent violent clashes between white nationalist groups and counter-protesters at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Houston Public Media reported yesterday that Black Lives Matter Houston and the Houston Police Department were coordinating to ensure that the “Destroy the Confederacy” rally would remain peaceful.

According to HPD, approximately 400 anti-statue and 60 pro-statue protesters participated in the rally, which remained free of incident.
