Segments Of Two Houston Freeways Will Be Closed For Construction This Weekend

Houston drivers face detours this weekend as two major freeways close for construction.

Crews will be hanging beams for a new connector ramp, so they’re shutting down I-10 in both directions at State Highway 99, The Grand Parkway.  The freeway is closing at 9:00 p.m. tonight. It’s set to reopen at 5:00 a.m. Monday morning.

TxDOT’s Deidrea Samuels says traffic will be detoured onto the frontage road while the freeway’s closed.

“The motorists are going to need to exit the main lanes at State Highway 99. They’re going to go through the intersection, and as soon as they pass the intersection, they’re going to re-enter the main lanes.”

The other freeway that’s going to be closed is westbound U.S. 290. The segment between West 43rd and Fairbanks-North Houston will close tonight at 9:00 and will reopen at 9:00 tomorrow morning.  Saturday night, work takes place on the westbound section between Fairbanks-North Houston and Gessner.

Karen Othon with TxDOT says they’re doing asphalt overlay work.

“We have over 250,000 vehicles a day that travel 290 and we are preparing the roadway for a reconstruction project that will begin in this area toward the beginning of next year.”

Signs will direct traffic onto the 290 frontage road. Othon says you can also use Hempstead Road as an alternate.
