Acting Secretary Of Labor Pushes Minimum Wage Increase

The Acting Secretary of Labor has been making the rounds in 20 U.S. cities to stump for the president's plan to raise the minimum wage.

Seth Harris has been meeting with low-wage workers to hear their stories and learn how they would benefit from raising the current rate of $7.25 per hour to $9 an hour by 2015.

“And we hear everytime the minimum wage is proposed for an increase that, you know, if we raise it we’re gonna lose a lot of jobs and businesses are not going to be able to hire workers. And based on past minimum wage increases, if you have a moderate increase in the minimum wage, you won’t have significant job loss at all. This extra money’s going to go right into paying for basic necessities for their families. That in turn helps the local community.”

Harris says nearly 1.5 million Texans would benefit from raising the minimum wage. He says 60 percent of those are working women.
