To prepare for the sequester, the Federal Aviation Administration plans to cut expenditures by $600 million for the rest of the fiscal year.
Josh Verde is president of Houston aviation consulting firm AeroVise. He says the agency is prioritizing cuts to minimize the effect on commercial aviation at major airports.
“Where you might see some problems is in the business aviation community, some cargo carriers, and general aviation.”
The FAA has announced plans to close control towers at more than 100 smaller airports around the country, including Sugar Land Regional and Conroe’s Lone Star Executive.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Safety Administration plans to reduce its workforce, potentially increasing wait times at airport security checkpoints. Neither the Houston Airport System nor TSA would comment on how passengers at Bush or Hobby airports might be affected.
