The Waco Street bridge just east of downtown over Interstate 10 was damaged by an oversized load in December. The westbound lanes of the freeway will be closed from tonight at 9 p.m. until early Monday morning.
This is TxDOT’s Danny Perez.
“We started repairs last weekend. We’re going to continue the repairs this weekend and we should wrap-up by the following weekend. It’s going to take a little time. This is one where we had to go in and do some more extensive repairs. It took a few weekends for us to do it, but we’re trying to get out of there and make sure it’s safe and improve mobility in that area.”
Perez says he advises motorists to find other ways to get around the area, but the frontage road will still be open at Waco.
“Since Waco is closed, there will be a continuous through the intersection, so there won’t be any traffic to have to worry about. They’ll have to stay on the frontage road and we’ll have officers out there and they’ll go through the signalized intersection and they’ll get back on the main lanes, but of course, there are other routes they can take. They can use HWY 610 to get to HWY 45. Depends on where they’re going. We ask them to be patient and if necessary seek an alternate route.”
Perez says TxDOT is often able to re-open lanes sooner than scheduled. Last weekend, the same lanes re-opened on Sunday.
Meanwhile, METRO announced earlier this week that light rail service will be closed this weekend as well. The transit agency is preparing the line to connect with three other lines currently under construction.
