The legal fight over redistricting has delayed the process, but Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Don Sumners says things are starting to move now.
“The good news is that the voter registration certificates will be mailed to the voters in time to vote in the May 12th election and to vote in the primaries.”
The May 12th election is what’s known as a Limited Uniform Election. About 80 local jurisdictions are holding elections, mostly school boards and utility districts. Sumners says about 1.9 million of the voter certificates will be send out later this month.
“We’re expecting that the certificates will be mailed between April 16 and the 25th, hopefully closer to the 16th than the 25th.”
Sumners says he’s heard from voters who are nervous they won’t get their cards in time to cast ballots next month.
“We have had numerous calls, back primarily in January when people were expecting to get them and had not gotten them. Things have sort of quieted down since that time.”
Sumners says there will be a number of new voting precincts as a result of the changed voting boundaries, but he says many of those will be consolidated into larger, familiar voting locations.
