How Texas Ranks In The Fashion World

The Global Language Monitor has unveiled its top fifty global fashion capitals of the year. For the first time, the list showcases two Texas cities.

tx flagCredit the royal wedding and luxury design house Alexander McQueen. London has bumped New York to become the Top Global Fashion Capital of 2011. Making its debut on the list at number 40: Austin. The state capital becomes the second Lone Star city in the rankings. Dallas climbed three spots to number 37 this year.

“And Houston’s on our watch list, which means you might see them next year.”

Jared Lang is the founder of the annual fashion show Fashion Houston.

“Houston, because of its low cost of living, has such a strong possibility to set up manufacturing here for designers and things like that, that we feel like Houston is primed for getting recognition in the fashion world as somewhere to be reckoned with.”

The low cost of living, combined with the city’s economic strength, means Houstonians also spend lot of money on clothes. Lang says that, for many designers, Houston now represents either the number one or number two fashion market in the country.
