The Memorial Park Outer Loop Trail begins near the Living Bridge and continues along the west side of the Memorial Loop near the tree line past the Tennis Center, and ends near the soccer field on the east side of the Park. Mayor Annise Parker says it will greatly improve the experience for all park users.
“People are doing the Memorial Park loop, rain or shine. It’s often a crowded trail, it’s a heavily travelled trail. This is an opportunity to provide an alternative for those runners, but it’s also a first-class, high quality trail.”
The trail is part of a 10-million dollar capital campaign to make improvements to the park. Mindy Hildebrand chairs the campaign. While it’s not affected by Houston’s budget constraints, she says the public private partnership provides a solid financial stream that makes these projects possible.
We’re fortunate that we have over four million people come to Memorial Park every year and they’re passionate about this park so, it was easy. Quite honestly, it’s been easy to raise the money. The funds have always been above the projects, and working with the city of Houston and the Houston Parks Department has been a real pleasure.”
To date, the campaign has completed the Memorial Park Living Bridge, the Tennis Center and now, the Outer Loop Trail.
