Backstage the 2011 Offshore Technology Conference

The 2011 Offshore Technology Conference kicks off today. Andrew Schneider takes us behind the scenes at Reliant Park.

It’s been a busy few months at Reliant Park. First came the Rodeo. Next, the Final Four. Now, crews are scrambling to transform the complex to host the Offshore Technology Conference, the largest such exhibition in nearly 30 years.

“We have about 2500 companies exhibiting this year from 40 countries.”

OTC spokeswoman Margaret Watson is threading her way through packed aisles.  All the while, she’s dodging one-man Yale forklifts, transporting four million pounds of equipment.

“These are huge displays. Some of them are two-story, double decks. They’ve got places for meetings, cause OTC is a place for business. People come here to show their new technology. They come here in order to demonstrate their products and get new customers. It’s kind of the world’s marketplace for the offshore industry.”

The doors open to the public today at 9 a.m.
