Benefits such as profit sharing and healthcare are important to workers of all ages, according to the latest survey from Kelly Services. Bill Lemons with Kelly’s Houston office says there are some generational differences.
“I was surprised to see that because — at least from my experiences — younger folks are not nearly as worried about health care as older ones are, obviously. But you know, interestingly, this data shows across every single generation that it is of sustantial interest. Every generation believes the employers ought to be supplying some form of health care.”
The survey finds that aside from salary, the reward that rates highest is health benefits, followed by flexible hours and retirement benefits.
“Gen Y typically have no interest in lifetime employment with a single company, and that’s probably due in part, (because) it’s simply not available anymore. Boomers are the last to experience that lifetime employment. Gen Y, and to some degree the Gen X, are very much motivated by being employable — more so than just employed. In other words, they want to hone their skills and they want to move up on projects and things like that. Really, a fascinating difference from previous generations.”
The findings are part of the Kelly Global Workforce Index, which polled 134,000 workers, including 13,000 in the United States.
