A four-day Business Convention and Expo for the Deaf is set in Houston this week. Ed Mayberry reports.

The Business Convention and Expo for the Deaf is for deaf entrepreneurs and small business owners from all backgrounds, including marketing, sales, technology, finance and other areas.? Vladimar Kotenev is chairman of the event, and is heard here through his signer.

“Yeah, we also have interpreters that will be there at the convention.? There’s 36 different workshops, and we want to get different ideas — feedback about how we can overcome any barriers that may exist and how we can confront different new challenges in this tough economy that we have right now.”

Kotenev says the convention is not for just the hard-of-hearing.

“We are really focusing on more of a broader picture.? We want to work together with any of the different communities, whatever their diversity is and their background.? We don’t want to be isolated.? We picked Houston because it’s a leader in the business community and also it’s sort of accessible from the east and the west.”

The inaugural Business Convention and Expo for the Deaf begins tomorrow at the Omni Galleria.
