Crimestoppers Wants Help Solving Doctor’s Murder

Houston Crimestoppers is offering a reward that could help investigators in Austin County solve the murder of a Houston doctor last weekend. Laurie Johnson reports.

Dr. J. Mario Gonzalez, a pulmonary specialist at Methodist Hospital here in Houston, was shot and killed as he arrived at his weekend ranch in Bellville, about 65 miles northwest of Houston. Authorities say a ranch hand was also shot, but Gonzalez’s wife and young son were unharmed. Now Houston Crime Stoppers is offering a 5-thousand dollar reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. This is Crime Stoppers Executive Director Katherine Cabaniss.

“Crime Stoppers of Houston is trying to help Austin County Crime Stoppers and really trying the help solve this case. Dr. Gonzalez was certainly a citizen here of Houston. He  was someone who was known and loved in our town and we want to do everything that we can do to help Austin County to solve this case.”

Cabaniss say it helps that authorities know some basic facts about the case. They’re looking for two vehicles that were seen leaving the ranch, an older white F-150 pick-up truck and what appeared to be an older, dark red Honda Civic.

“The fact that we have the description of two different vehicles and we know that there were four men that committed this crime, that’s some pretty good information.  It gives someone out there who knows who did this enough to go on to say, yes, I know who did it and we’re asking them to pick up the phone and make that call.”
