The Blue Alert will work in a similar fashion as the Amber Alert system. Information will be flashed on highway signs and broadcast through the media.
Texas Department of Transportation Spokesman Mark Cross says it’s essentially an expansion of the Amber and Silver Alerts.
“But it is for law enforcement officials when they’ve been hurt or killed. And when we’re looking for the assailants, we will put out messages as far and wide as we can to help locate that person who has been accused of injuring or killing the law enforcement officer.”
When the alert is activated, TxDOT will display the suspect’s vehicle information and physical description. The Blue Alert can only be activated by the Governor’s Division of Emergency Management and will have to meet several criteria for use.
