Results-Only Work Environment

A new book describes a work system that enables employees to do their best, as it does away with meetings. Ed Mayberry reports.

The traditional work environment is about showing up, but author Cali Ressler says merely showing up at a job doesn’t necessarily deliver results. The Results-Only Work Environment cares only about well-defined goals and results.

“The idea behind the book ‘Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It’ is all about being treated like an adult, and not a child, in the work environment. In a results-only work environment, each person is free to do whatever they want whenever they want, as long as the work gets done.”

Ressler says it’s absurd to maintain the traditional nine-to-five system in the middle of the most sweeping technology changes in history. She calls for a fundamental re-thinking of how work is defined and what activities really contribute to a company’s bottom line.

“People that are in a results-only work environment do equate it to almost like being in college. You are expected to do what you need to do to get the grades you need. And if you decide not to show up to class, you get a failing grade. And that’s exactly what happens in the work environment — no results, no job. It’s that simple.”

Ressler says there are other benefits to instituting a results-only work environment.

“Productivity on ROWE teams has gone up an average of 41 percent. The second thing that businesses can expect to see if they migrate to a results-only work environment is that voluntary turnover goes way down.”

Ressler says the transition to this type of work environment requires letting go of industrial-era management techniques.
