Protecting Customer Information

The state attorney general has reached
an agreement with CVS regarding the
handling of customers’ private information.

Houston Public Radio’s Capella Tucker reports
the AG’s office is using the case as a
reminder to other businesses on how to
protect customers from identity theft.

The case involves a CVS store in Liberty.
Customer information was thrown away
in a trash can.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott says
the state toughened laws about how private
information is handled.

“Businesses across the state of Texas are obligated to shred, erase, or otherwise make unreadable, personal, identifying information of their consumers.”

Abbott says CVS had policies in place and this
incident was due to human error.

In a written statement, CVS says appropriate
disciplinary action was taken.

The information was retrieved from the trash.

Officials are confident no one’s identity was

Abbott says identity theft is expensive for all involved.

“Businesses bare the brunt of the financial impact of identity theft in this country. Businesses pay out about 50 billion dollars, or lose about 50 billion dollars a year because of identity theft. This is important to consumers, businesses, this is important to everybody across this country that we do all we can to stem the tide of identity theft.”

The AG’s office is launching a new website about identity theft.

It includes a step-by-step guide on what to do
if you think you are the victim of identity theft.
