With just a week before Christmas, today is the busiest day of the year for Houston area post offices. The U.S. Postal Service is at full-staff, sorting through tens of thousands of pieces of mail and packages headed out before the holiday. Here’s more from Houston Public Radio’s Jack Williams.
On the huge sorting floor at the main post office downtown, hundreds of workers are processing large bins of mail and packages, most of it headed out the door and on its way to holiday destinations all over the country. Leronne Charles drives a forklift and has worked for the postal service for 15 years.
“It’s always hectic at this time of year, but we’re well-prepared. That have staffing levels properly and we have technology that has helped us. We’re well-prepared.”
Across the city, more than 60 post offices are busy today as customers try to ensure their packages and letters get to where they’re supposed to go before Christmas. This is the Postal Service’s Dave Lewin.
“We’re expecting roughly 90,000 transactions at post offices across the greater Houston area today and that’s always held true the week prior to Christmas week. People come to the post office on that Monday with all their weekend shopping gifts and that sort of thing and their greeting cards that they’ve worked on, and we’ll be here to help them out again this year.”
Lewin says online services and automated mailing kiosks at some post offices are making things easier for most customers this year.
