Another weekend and another closure along the Katy Freeway. Contractors will be setting support beams that make-up the new direct-connector from the west belt to I-10 eastbound. Here’s more from Houston Public Radio’s Jack Williams
The work on the direct connecter was stalled because of the threat of Hurricane Dean last weekend, but resumes at 5 AM tomorrow. Tanya McWashington is with the Katy Freeway expansion project says the westbound lanes of the Katy at the west belt will be closed.
“Traffic will be detoured to exit at the Beltway 8 exit to the I-10 westbound frontage road. We will have the corresponding northbound and southbound Beltway 8 frontage roads closed so that officers will be able to pull traffic through the light, minimizing the delay there and traffic will re-enter the I-10 westbound main lanes at the entrance ramp just east of Wilcrest.”
The project at the West Belt and I-10 intersection was slated to take a couple of years, but could be done sooner. McWashington says residents and motorists can expect closures virtually every weekend in the area.
“We started with actual interchange work in March of this year so we’re well underway so I think people have pretty much gotten used to the movement in that area.”
The freeway will re-open in time for the Monday morning commute.
