The government presents its final rebuttal, and then the jury finally gets the Enron fraud and conspiracy case. Houston Public Radio’s Ed Mayberry reports. Aired 5/17/06 during the KUHF Morning Business Report.

The defense presented closing arguments in the 16-week trial of Enron founder Ken Lay and former CEO Jeff Skilling, with attorney Bruce Collins asking jurors why Lay would come back in the last three months before Enron’s bankruptcy if he thought the company was in bad shape. Attorney Daniel Petrocelli noted that the government used the word “conspiracy” only four times in the trial, proving the prosecution backed off from its original indictments.

The verdict’s not in, but Jeff Skilling said he’s been impressed with Petrocelli.

Prosecutor Sean Berkowitz is expected to deliver the government’s rebuttal this morning, and the case will finally go to the jury.
