Today, we welcome artists from the 2009 Opera Vista Festival! Known for its contemporary, and often provocative, fully-staged productions, the Festival's main attraction is its Opera Competition. The 2nd Opera Vista Festival, presented by Opera Vista and the Nova Arts Project, gets underway this Thursday evening at 8:00PM with the opening-night performance of Edalat Square, a new opera by New York composer, R. Timothy Brady, and one of the pieces that won the previous Festival Competition. Friday night at 8:00PM the Festival presents staged excerpts from some of the pieces that are semi-finalists in this year’s Opera Competition. Singers from the production of Edalat Square offer excerpts from the Geary Performance Studio and are accomanied by the Zephyr Quartet in a session hosted by KUHF’s Chris Johnson. Listen. Download.

KUHF’s Bob Stevenson speaks with  Director Cheryl Kaplan and actor Steve Garfinkel from Main Street Theater‘s new production of Awake and Sing!. It’s Clifford Odets’s drama about a Jewish family in The Bronx and their financial and emotional struggles during the Great Depression. There are performances through June 7th at Main Street Theater’s Rice Village facility. Chris Rivera plays trans-gendered punk-rock goddess, Hedwig, in the new Unhinged Productions staging of the Off-Broadway musical-comedy revue, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Heaven Stephens portrays Hedwig’s second husband, Itzhak. Keyboardist Franz Ortiz is the show’s Musical Director, and Wayne Cribbs plays guitar in Hedwig’s band. Associate Artistic Director, Betsy Brown, staged Hedwig for Unhinged Productions. They all gather in the Geary Performance Studio for a preview session with KUHF’s Chris Johnson.
