Small Business Growth in Employment

Small business employment rose by 0.3% in April, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth in hiring for small firms. Andrew Schneider has this report.

growthIntuit, Inc. of Mountain View, California reports that companies with fewer than 20 employees added 60,000 new jobs in April. That brings the total number of new small business jobs created in the past 18 months to nearly 845,000.

Susan Woodward is an economist and contractor with Intuit.

“Every number is up except the hourly wage. Employment is up in all nine Census divisions. Employee monthly hours worked is up. The fraction of employees, the hourly employees, who work full time is also up. In fact, that number is up really strongly. Compensation is up a teeny bit. So, what this tells me is that the atmosphere for small business hiring is pretty good.”

Small business hiring in Texas was a shade lower than the national average last month at 0.2%.
