The Sugar Land council voted to turn the parcel of undeveloped land owned by the city into the site of its proposed minor league stadium.
City of Sugar Land Spokesman Doug Adolph says quality of life issues played a big role in selecting the site in the old part of Sugar Land, near the historic Imperial Sugar refinery.
“They took a look at noise, they took a look at lighting, traffic and public safety. There were extensive studies done, the studies were shared with the public in a series of public meetings as well as the website. And we took all of that feedback, shared it with city council and found that the stadium will have no negative impacts to the community that can’t be mitigated in some fashion.”
The location is also near the Sugar Land Regional Airport. It’s in an area that’s undergoing a lot of mixed-use development.
The city hopes to break ground on the stadium some time this year and have it open for the start of the 2012 baseball season.
